The AXA Defender is a super convenient Dutch-made wheel lock. Although rarely seen in Australia, a wheel lock of some sort is on practically every single bicycle in the Netherlands. The wheel lock concept is simple - everything is inbuilt to the bicycle, meaning you can't forget to take your lock with you and you don't have to find somewhere to put it. The keys don't come out of the lock except when it's locked, reducing chances to forget or lose your keys.
The AXA lock is attached to the frame with bolts. However, this only works for frames that have included dedicated bosses (threaded inserts) on the frame for the wheel lock. If you don't have these, you can still connect this lock with cable ties. When the cable ties are cut, the wheel will still be locked but the part that the thieves want to access to break the lock will be more exposed. All eZeebikes except the folding Quando come with the necessary bosses (and many come with this lock already installed).
The extra security provided by this lock is often underestimated due to its size. However, bicycle locks are all about increasing the time taken and the types of tools required to steal your bike. The AXA lock's subtelty and hard to reach location mean that most brute force tools (bolt cutters, hacksaws) aren't effective. Naturally it's not enough just on its own because the bike can still be carried away. It is recommended in conjuction with a strong lock to hold the bike to a bike rack. This is compatible with the AXA plug in chain which inserts straight into the wheel lock without requiring any additional keys, as shown in the third photo. The AXA plug in chain does NOT come with this wheel lock, it is purchased separately.
